I served on the USS Saratoga from August 1977 – August 1980. I worked in the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD).
I was a bit unusual in that I was a part of the aviation community, but rather than being assigned to one of the squadrons on the ship, I was part of the ship’s company. What that means is, unlike the squadron personnel, who departed the ship for various Naval Air Stations when we were stateside, I was permanently assigned to the ship.
It made for a variety of duties which many "airdales" never had to perform, such as manning a repair locker (damage control responsibilities) on the ship, and performing rehab duties (remodeling) spaces. The majority of the air wing personnel only came on board the ship for workups (training, qualficiations before deployments) and deployments.
