CET, Cincinnati | PROFILES IN COURAGE


	African Americans in Greater Cincinnati who have successfully met and overcome major life challenges are honored at the sixth annual Profiles In Courage recognition program, sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, WCPO, the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Herald. Those honored in 2008 are Marian Spencer, Betty Southall, Edwin Rigaud, Dr. Chinwe Tosha Erike, and John H.Leahr.

JOAN R. HERSCHEDE

The Joan R. Herschede Profiles in Courage Scholarship was created to honor the legacy of one of the area's leading philanthropists. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Joni was the first female member of the Board of Directors at Fifth Third Bank, and was truly committed to her community.

MARIAN SPENCER

Marian Spencer was the first female president of the local chapter of the NAACP in 1981 and elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1983.

BETTY SOUTHALL

Betty Southall has been employed at Nu Blend Paint since 2002 and has worked many years at fast-food restaurants while supporting a family of eight children.

EDWIN RIGAUD

Edwin Rigaud is the founding president and CEO for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He took on the leadership of the Freedom Center as an executive on loan from Procter & Gamble and assembled a team that built the museum.

DR CHINWE TOSHA ERIKE

Dr. Chinwe Tosha Erike is a resident in psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He was born in Harlem, and received a degree in medicine from the SUNY-Stoney Brooke School of Medicine.

JOHN H. LEAHR

John H. Leahr is a Tuskegee Airman who flew 123 missions and has been decorated with the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, plus area and theater ribbons.
